This book holds a special place in my affections, its one of the first books on strategy and change I was able to put into practice. I have used it on just about ever change program I have run. Many people will recognize my MOBILIZATION plan, its change structures and ideas are heavily influenced by theses three writers. I used this first at Digital UK, Digital Global, and every other company I worked with afterwards. I think its at the heart of the change approach I adopted and was/is a major contribution to my change success.

 

The change approaches were practical and effective and I thank the authors for providing me with a head start in change management techniques.

It is not a cookbook of how-to’s. It a research report into how cultural differences underlay everything you want to accomplish.

While the book is titled Cultures and Organisations, it is really about ethnic cultures, not corporate cultures.

I have found this book very useful for new change consultants who are venturing out into a global environment, this at least prepares people to think about cultural norms and the way in which certain societies generally view the world, get along with each other and make decisions.. Be cautioned this is not an approach to stereotype cultures, rather to provide the student with an understanding of the normal cultural drivers.

Charles Handy has been very influential shaping my attitudes to work, life styles and the management of organisations. 

 

(Other Handy Writings) I recommend reading all his books and listening to his audio recordings. For me Charles outlines succinctly the demands changing corporations and globalization place on individuals and society. A very inspirational and thought provoking commentator, he positions the world of work in the larger context of ethics and morality. He also explores the human struggle to maintain individuality, spirituality, choice, freedom and dignity.

Probably one of the most important method books in my collection, this coupled with ‘Organization Development and Change’ formed the backbone of my personal development and the formulation of all my change programmes.

 

Personal acknowledgement: Published by Dr. J.Jonker this workbook from Pba training Services has provided a change management method and training (from 1996) which I still make use of today. This understanding provided me with an opportunity to work on major global change programmes at Digital Equipment where the methods were put to good use in creating a new business model. Personal Acknowledgement: Having read hundreds of books on organisational development I have to say this is the best. It is true to say that this book has never been far from my side from 1997 It covers the wide range of activities required to transform organisations, providing intervention theory, diagnosis, learning and development structure design etc. This single work has informed 70% of my thinking towards change management. I cannot rate this book highly enough, its the most important book in my collection and has informed most of the change management work I have conducted. These approaches coupled with Transformational Leadership and Lean from Womack and Jones makes an unbeatable combination. It does take quite a bit of study and even more practice. I want to thank Cummings and Worley for producing this book, it has changed the course of my career.
