Man for Himself: An Enquiry into the Psychology of Ethics
Erich Fromm2002 (based on a publication from 1950)
Routledge, an imprint of Taylor & Francis Books Ltd.
ISBN 0415307716
Erich Fromm fought long and hard for the rights and freedoms of the individual. He also recognized that fundamental to this pursuit is the promotion of self-knowledge. In encouraging people to analyse their own behaviour, Fromm identified the crucial link between psychology and ethics that underpins all our actions. Moreover, he saw in this a way out of the meaningless impasse which he regarded as the plight of the modern human race. The task that Fromm sets himself, therefore, in “Man for Himself” is no less than to identify “what man is, how he ought to live and how the tremendous energies within man can be released and used productively”.
Fromms work is grounded in Psychoanalysis and the existentialism of Sartre and Others. Both schools of thought focus determining ‘how to be’ in contrast to ‘how to have’.
Fromm (writing in 1945) predicts and discusses the emergence of ‘Marketing man’ where each of us has to constantly change our marketability to maintain employment, this has an impact on how we identify ourselves and what values we must seek to ensure alignment with integrity.
Combining this thinking with cognitive behavioural techniques creates a powerful transforming approach for individuals to step firstly into the role of leadership of ones-self then others. Stripping away the notion that the past must constrain the present, and leaving free the possibilities of new futures being created in the present.
Fromm argues that the freedom of choice provided by ‘who we are being’ is something that modern man is constantly running away from and abdicating personal responsibility in the name of determinism. Hence Fromms often quoted, but misunderstood phrase…’Mans Escape from Freedom’.

The Art of Possibility
Benjamin Zander2002
Books Australia Ltd.
ISBN 0142001104
There is no change without leadership at all levels. This book is a good introduction into the principles of transformational leadership. Creating Possibilities for others such that they are touched moved and inspired. The leadership theory is based on leading oneself not others and focuses on who you are being not what you are doing. This is not a book about manipulative Machiavellian techniques rather it’s about creating free choice for others where they are inspired by the possibility you have created for your life.
Benjamin is an inspirational and motivational personality because of his ability to be totally authentic in his relationships.

This possibility philosophy is at the heart of the change management thinking approaches I later developed. |

ISBN 0684858398
This has been an early influence and I have carried its ideas and concepts thoughout my life.
This publication is not strictly speaking on the subject of transformational leadership however, I have been heavily influenced by most of Stephen Coveys works, I have used this publication as source material for career development workshops. This is still a classic. |
